A gastroscopy is recommended when so-called alarm symptoms occur, such as loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, nausea, vomiting, food poisoning, bleeding or gastric emptying.
For some diseases, such as Crohn's disease, a mirror may be necessary even without symptoms. Many other stomach upsets or digestive problems may also require a gastroscopy.
Gastroscopy is an uncomfortable test and it is recommended that you have anaesthesia. Although gastroscopy under anaesthesia is more expensive, the discomfort of the examination can be completely eliminated by anaesthesia.
Presentation of the test
At the start of a gastroscopy under anaesthesia, our anaesthesiologist places the patient under a superficial anaesthetic, during which the patient can be awakened but does not experience what has happened.
During the gastroscopy, our doctor uses a thin fibre-optic instrument to examine the oesophagus, stomach and horseshoe. If necessary, the instrument is used to take a tissue sample and may also be used for therapeutic procedures, such as removing small polyps or stopping bleeding.
Once the examination is complete, the patient wakes up quickly with a clear conscience.
What to know about the test
After a gastroscopy, you should not eat or drink for at least half an hour - the anaesthetic fluid can make you feel sick.
It is important to note that temporary unsteadiness may persist in the hours after the anaesthetics have been administered, for example, you should not drive a car.
If indicated, the examining specialist may take a histological sample and, depending on the patient's condition, may remove a polyp or polyps. The cost of these procedures is not included in the price of the examination.
Settlement also to a health fund account
The fee for the examination can of course also be charged to your health insurance account - our colleagues will be happy to provide you with more details. Visit
