15–20 minutes to help prevent stroke

Carotid ultrasound examination

  • Doppler measurement As well as the vessel wall, we also measure the speed of blood flow.
  • 15–20 minutes That is all it takes to assess your stroke risk.
  • No radiation exposure Needs no preparation with medication and can be repeated as often as needed.
  • Immediate report You receive a detailed report on the result and the risks straight away.
Eight situations in which screening is advisable

When is a carotid artery ultrasound recommended?

The condition of the carotid arteries fundamentally determines the blood supply to the brain — it is worth having them checked if you have any of the risk factors below.

  • Family history

If there is a family history of early heart attack or stroke.

  • Known high blood pressure

Persistently high blood pressure can damage the walls of the neck arteries.

  • Raised cholesterol

Deposits of blood lipids (plaques) can narrow the arteries.

  • Diabetes

Diabetes increases the risk of developing atherosclerosis.

  • Age over 50

Recommended even if you have no complaints, as part of regular vascular screening.

  • Temporary visual or speech disturbance

These symptoms may be warning signs of an impending stroke.

  • Heavy smoking

Tobacco smoke has been proven to accelerate the calcification of artery walls.

  • Frequent dizziness

If the causes of balance problems are unclear, it is important to check the blood supply to the brain.

Prevention is tangible here: in 15–20 minutes you will know whether there is any narrowing or plaque in the neck arteries.

This list is for information only and does not replace a specialist examination. If you suddenly develop a speech disturbance, weakness on one side or loss of vision, call 112 immediately — these may be symptoms of a stroke. If you have any questions, call us: 06-1-413-2500 (H–P 9–17).

Three reasons that make the decision easier

Why choose a carotid examination at Endomedix?

  • Precise and immediate evaluation

During the examination, our specialists measure not only the structure of the vessels but also the speed of blood flow (Doppler technique). You receive a detailed medical report on the results and any risks straight away, so there is no waiting for a diagnosis.

  • Completely painless and safe

The examination involves no intervention or radiation exposure. The measurement, taken at the front of the neck, is comfortable, needs no preparation with medication and can be repeated as often as needed — making it ideal for ongoing monitoring of plaques in the artery walls.

  • Comprehensive diagnostic background

At Endomedix, if required, we can combine the result of the vascular ultrasound with a gastroenterology or other specialist consultation. This approach helps us to examine not just a single organ but the whole body and how everything is connected.

Four small things that help us in our work

How should you prepare for the examination?

No special preparation is needed for the carotid ultrasound — there are just a few small things to bear in mind.

  • 01

    Light clothing

It is best to wear a shirt or top that leaves your neck easily accessible.

  • 02

    Jewellery

Necklaces must be removed for the examination, so we recommend leaving them at home.

  • 03

    Previous reports

If you have had a neck ultrasound before, bring the report so that the doctor can compare the condition of the artery walls.

  • 04

    Medicines

Take your regular medicines — especially blood pressure medication — as usual.

What you should know about the carotid arteries

Did you know?

Five questions and answers about carotid ultrasound.

  • Did you know that even the smallest calcification of the artery wall can be seen?

At this stage, severe narrowing of the arteries can still be prevented with lifestyle changes or medication.

  • Did you know that the Doppler method also shows the direction and speed of blood flow?

This shows the doctor exactly how much any narrowing is obstructing blood flow.

  • Did you know that the condition of the neck arteries also tells us about the coronary arteries?

If calcification is visible here, the heart is also more likely to be affected.

  • Did you know that the examination fee can also be paid from your health fund account?

This way, prevention pays off not only for your health but financially too.

  • Did you know that the examination takes only 15–20 minutes?

That is enough time to significantly reduce your risk of stroke.
