Thyroid ultrasound examination
- Nodules of 2–3 millimetres High-resolution imaging also detects lesions that cause no symptoms.
- Doppler examination As well as the tissue structure, we also analyse blood flow.
- Immediate report You receive your report at the end of the examination, together with an explanation.
- Safe for expectant mothers too No radiation exposure, so it can be repeated as often as needed to monitor nodules.
When is a thyroid ultrasound recommended?
Thyroid disorders often cause vague symptoms — ultrasound gives an accurate picture of the organ's structure.
-
A palpable lump or swelling
For any change noticed at the front of the neck.
-
A lump-in-the-throat feeling
Difficulty swallowing or a feeling of tightness in the neck.
-
Sudden change in body weight
Rapid weight gain or loss that your diet does not explain.
-
Hair loss and dry skin
Common accompanying symptoms of thyroid dysfunction.
-
Rapid heartbeat, trembling
To investigate signs of an overactive thyroid.
-
Family history
If there is a family history of thyroid disease or thyroid tumours.
-
Hoarseness and neck symptoms
When a change in your voice cannot be linked to a respiratory infection.
-
Abnormal laboratory results
To clarify organic causes of high or low TSH levels.
The structural picture and the hormone levels together give a complete answer — both can be done at the same appointment.
This list is for information only and does not replace a specialist examination. Ultrasound shows the structure of the organ; assessing how it works also requires a hormone test. If you have any questions, call us: 06-1-413-2500 (H–P 9–17).
Why choose a thyroid ultrasound at Endomedix?

01
Detailed assessment of tissue structure and blood flow
With our modern equipment, we not only measure the size of the thyroid but also analyse the structure of its tissue and its blood flow. This helps to distinguish benign processes from suspicious lesions, so you get a more precise answer about your health.
-
02
Immediate evaluation and report
With us, there is no waiting for your report. As soon as the examination is over, our specialist gives you the detailed medical report, explains the nature of any nodules or inflammation seen, and advises you on any further endocrinological steps.
-
03
Risk-free and can be repeated regularly
Because the examination involves no radiation exposure, it is an ideal method for regular monitoring of known thyroid nodules. It is also safe for expectant mothers, who often need their thyroid checked because of hormonal changes.
How should you prepare for the examination?
Thyroid ultrasound is a simple procedure that does not require fasting — there are just a few small things to bear in mind.
-
01
Easy access to the neck
It is best to wear a shirt or top with a neckline that can easily be opened.
-
02
Remove jewellery
Necklaces must be removed for the examination — we recommend leaving them at home.
-
03
No need to fast
You can eat and drink as normal before the examination; it does not affect the result.
-
04
Previous reports
If you have a previous ultrasound report or TSH lab result, be sure to bring it with you.
Did you know?
Five questions and answers about the examination and the report.
-
Did you know that the examination also detects nodules that cause no symptoms?
A significant proportion of the population have small thyroid nodules; most of them are benign but need medical monitoring. High-resolution imaging can identify lesions as small as 2–3 millimetres, and regular check-ups can prevent nodules from growing large enough to press on the surrounding organs.
-
Did you know that ultrasound is essential in diagnosing Hashimoto's thyroiditis?
In autoimmune thyroiditis, the thyroid tissue typically becomes patchy and uneven. Laboratory tests show the presence of antibodies, whereas ultrasound confirms the extent of tissue destruction and the activity of the inflammation — and the increased blood flow seen on Doppler examination helps to assess whether the process is in an active phase.
-
Did you know that the lymph nodes in the neck must also be checked?
A professional thyroid screening does not stop at the organ itself: our specialists always review the surrounding chains of lymph nodes as well. Certain thyroid tumours first cause changes in the lymph nodes, and analysing their structure helps to decide whether a swelling is left over from a previous infection or is a process that needs further investigation.
-
Did you know that the result decides whether a fine-needle biopsy is needed?
Not every nodule needs to be sampled with a needle. Based on the ultrasound image, the doctor classifies lesions using the international TI-RADS scoring system, assessing the risk from the nodule's structure, margins and any calcifications within it. If the ultrasound shows no suspicious signs, the patient may be able to avoid needle sampling.

Did you know that the examination can be paid for from your health fund account?
By choosing our private care, you not only avoid waiting lists: the tax refund on health fund contributions also significantly reduces the cost of the examination.
Can also be paid from a health fund account
The examination fee can of course also be paid from your health fund account — our colleagues will be happy to give you the details. The list of health funds that work with Endomedix can be found here.
- Health fund account The ultrasound and specialist consultation fees can also be paid from your health fund account.
