Eight situations when it is worth having the test

When is the Helicobacter breath test recommended?

Helicobacter pylori is one of the main risk factors for stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers and stomach cancer. In the following cases, it is worth finding out whether the bacterium is present.

  • Recurring stomach complaints

For frequent bloating, nausea or recurring upper abdominal pain, to rule out a bacterial infection.

  • A burning sensation in the upper stomach

For regular heartburn and excess stomach acid, to find out whether a pathogen is behind it.

  • Family medical history

If there is a family history of stomach ulcers or stomach cancer, screening is particularly recommended.

  • Suspected ulcer disease

If inflammation or an ulcer has been diagnosed, to confirm the presence of the bacterium quickly and accurately.

  • Follow-up after treatment

After completing a course of antibiotics, to check that the infection has cleared and the treatment has worked.

  • Unexplained iron deficiency

If you have an absorption disorder or iron deficiency: the infection can prevent nutrients from being properly used.

  • Complaints in children

In case of loss of appetite or delayed development — the test is painless for children too.

  • Preventive screening

Even without symptoms: to reduce the risk of more serious digestive diseases.

Does any of these situations sound familiar? The test takes half an hour, and you receive the result before you leave the clinic.

This list is for information only and does not replace an examination by a specialist. The test is currently available at our Budapest (District XIII), Dombóvár and Miskolc centres. If you have any questions, call us: 06-1-413-2500 (H–P 9–17).

The road to recovery

The test process step by step

Four steps, half an hour in total — and at the end, the certified report is in your hands.

  • Crossed-out plate with cutlery: no eating for four hours before the test
    01

    Preparation and arrival

An empty stomach is the key to a successful test, so do not eat anything for 4 hours before the test begins. When you arrive, our assistants explain every step of the process in detail and prepare you for the painless measurement.

  • Patient swallows the marked capsule with a little water
    02

    Taking the capsule and waiting

As the first step, you swallow a special capsule labelled with the C-14 isotope with a little water. This is followed by a wait of roughly 15–20 minutes, during which the active substance reacts with any bacteria that may be present in the stomach.

  • Patient blows air into the breath test measuring device
    03

    Breath sample and analysis

Once the waiting time is over, you breathe into a special breath card. We place the sample straight into an analyser, which detects the presence of the pathogen within minutes and with exceptional accuracy — so you do not have to wait days for a lab result.

  • An analyser instrument that produces the test result within minutes
    04

    Immediate result and consultation

After the analysis, you receive the certified report straight away. If the test is positive, our colleagues help you book a specialist consultation, where our gastroenterologist recommends a targeted course of medication to clear the infection for good.

What you should know about Helicobacter pylori

Did you know?

Five questions and answers about the bacterium and the C-14 breath test.

  • Did you know that almost half of the world's population is infected?

Helicobacter pylori is one of the most common human infections and can go unnoticed in the body for a long time. Although many people have no symptoms, the bacterium keeps the stomach lining constantly inflamed, which, if left untreated, can lead to more serious complications.

  • Did you know that this bacterium is responsible for more than 80% of stomach ulcers?

It used to be thought that ulcers were caused solely by stress or spicy food. It has since been proven that Helicobacter pylori is the main cause. By targeting and eliminating the bacterium (eradication), ulcer disease can not only be treated but cured for good.

  • Did you know that early detection can be life-saving?

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified Helicobacter pylori as a Group I carcinogen. Clearing the infection significantly reduces the risk of stomach cancer, so screening is recommended even without symptoms if there is a family history of the disease.

  • Did you know that the infection can also cause developmental problems in childhood?

The bacterium does not only affect adults: in children, infection often leads to loss of appetite and iron deficiency, and in turn to reduced performance or delayed growth. With the painless breath test, the infection can be confirmed quickly and safely in children too.

  • Did you know that the accuracy of the C-14 breath test exceeds 95%?

This modern, non-invasive procedure is one of the most reliable methods of detecting the bacterium. It does not require a gastroscopy, yet gives an extremely precise result within minutes. It is also ideal for checking whether a course of antibiotics has worked, so that we can be sure of complete recovery.
