Food intolerance is when the body does not tolerate certain foods or ingredients, and this triggers various symptoms and complaints.
Food intolerance is not the same as food allergy. Food allergy affects relatively few people; its symptoms can be severe and appear immediately after eating the food that triggers the allergy. Food intolerance, on the other hand, affects one in three people; symptoms can develop days or even weeks after eating the food, and their severity also depends on how much of it we have eaten.
The symptoms of food intolerance vary enormously. The condition mainly causes digestive complaints – diarrhoea, bloating, excessive wind – but headaches, migraine, spots, acne or other skin problems such as eczema may also develop. Food intolerance has also been linked to a number of diseases (e.g. IBS).
Food intolerance can have several underlying mechanisms. At Endomedix, we test for food sensitivities that develop as a result of an immune response. The blood tests measure the amount of IgG antibodies produced against foods. If the test shows an intolerance to certain foods, leaving those foods out of your diet is expected to reduce your symptoms.

The complex laboratory food intolerance test provides a comprehensive diagnostic result that forms the basis for a personalised diet, and thus for eliminating the symptoms caused by food intolerance; however, under the current regulations – in force at the beginning of 2018 – it does not entitle you to a tax allowance.
For gluten intolerance (gluten sensitivity, coeliac disease), a specialist certificate entitling you to the tax allowance can only be issued if the preliminary laboratory result is confirmed by a histological examination of the small intestine (biopsy), which can be taken during gastroscopy. A specialist certificate of lactose intolerance can be issued on the basis of the results of the hydrogen breath test(s) carried out.
