When should you see a proctologist?

What happens during the consultation and anoscopy?

A personalised medical history
In a relaxed conversation, our doctor will go through your symptoms, eating habits and lifestyle with you. This atmosphere of trust is essential for an accurate diagnosis, as proctological complaints often have simple lifestyle-related causes.

Gentle and accurate diagnostics
The examination is performed with you lying on your left side. The doctor inserts a thin, lubricated, single-use instrument — an anoscope — which allows the rectal canal to be viewed in high resolution up to a depth of 10–12 cm. This method is not painful, but it is essential for identifying the stage of haemorrhoids and other changes, such as fissures or polyps.

Immediate treatment plan
At Endomedix, there is no waiting after the diagnosis. Our specialist draws up a treatment plan straight away, whether it involves medication, a special diet or — if your condition allows — even immediate rubber band ligation of the haemorrhoids, i.e. Barron ligation.
How should you prepare for the examination?
You do not need to worry about complicated preparation before a proctological examination, but a few small things can help make your visit smooth and stress-free.

Arrival and timing
Please arrive at our Budapest centre at least 20 minutes before your booked appointment. Before the examination we use a gentle on-site cleansing preparation, which needs about 15 minutes to take effect. This means the doctor can examine a clean, clearly visible area.

Food and drink
The examination does not require an empty stomach. You can have breakfast or lunch as usual, and drinking plenty of fluids — water, tea — is actively recommended. Eating does not affect the result of the anoscopy in any way.

Clothing and comfort
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that is easy to take off and put on. You only need to remove your lower clothing for the examination — we provide disposable examination shorts for this — but looser clothing makes it easier to get ready and to dress again after the visit.

Reports and documents
If you have previous proctology reports, discharge summaries or relevant lab results, please bring them with you. This helps our specialist to get a more accurate picture of your medical history and of how your complaints have developed.
