Abdominal ultrasound scan with specialist consultation

An abdominal ultrasound scan is used to examine the abdominal cavity organs - such as the liver, gall bladder, spleen and kidneys. The ultrasound scan can also be used to look at the larger veins in the abdomen and the lymph nodes next to the main abdominal artery. Ultrasound is often considered as part of a gastroenterology check-up because it is risk-free but can also provide an accurate picture of certain organs in the abdomen and pelvis. The ultrasound scan can detect certain organ abnormalities, biliary and renal cysts, abdominal cysts, abscesses, certain inflammatory diseases and benign and malignant tumours. In the case of gastrointestinal complaints, abdominal ultrasound is not a complete diagnostic method and organ abnormalities must be confirmed by further instrumental investigations, such as gastroscopy or colonoscopy.

Presentation of the test

The test is performed by first lying on your back on the examination bed and then exposing the parts to be examined. To spread the ultrasound waves, the patient's abdomen can be lubricated with a gel. To perform the examination, our doctor moves the ultrasound machine's probe head on the patient's abdomen, which does not cause any pain. The image produced by the machine is immediately visible on the screen, allowing your doctor to measure the size of each organ and save still images of the scan. The ultrasound scan is complemented by a consultation with a specialist gastroenterologist.

What to know about the test

An ultrasound scan can only be done on an empty stomach, so you should not eat, smoke or chew gum, or drink any liquids other than still water for 5-6 hours before the scan.
