When is rectoscopy advisable?
There are cases where a surface examination is not enough. Rectoscopy shows the deeper section of the rectum — where a significant proportion of rectal cancers develop.

Rectal bleeding of unclear origin
If the cause of bleeding cannot be identified as external haemorrhoids.

Change in bowel habits
For alternating persistent constipation and diarrhoea.

Stools becoming thinner
Which may indicate narrowing of a section of the rectum.

Lower abdominal pain or tension
That radiates towards the deeper sections of the rectum.

Suspected polyps or polyp follow-up
For regular monitoring of previously diagnosed lesions.

Foreign-body sensation or persistent mucus discharge
Which may originate from the upper third of the rectum.

Cancer prevention, screening
Over the age of 40-50, or with a family history, even without symptoms.

Chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
To assess the activity of symptoms and the condition of the mucosa.

How the examination works

A deeper view, a more accurate picture
While anoscopy only sees the first part of the rectal canal, rectoscopy lets us view the entire length of the rectum (about 20-25 cm). This distance is critical because a significant proportion of rectal cancers develop in this section, which makes the examination key to early screening.

Modern rigid-instrument technology
For the examination, we use a special instrument fitted with optics. During the procedure, we blow in a little air to smooth out the bowel walls; this may cause a feeling of pressure, but it makes it possible to detect even the smallest mucosal abnormalities. Our specialists' extensive experience ensures that the procedure takes as little time as possible.

Immediate diagnosis and treatment plan
You will not leave the examination feeling uncertain. The doctor evaluates the findings immediately, explains the nature of any changes and draws up a treatment plan – whether that means medication, further imaging or a specialist surgical procedure.
How should you prepare for the examination?
No laxatives or fasting at home are needed — there are four things to bear in mind, and we take care of the rest on site.

Arrival
Please arrive 20 minutes early so that we can carry out gentle on-site cleansing (LaxaClean). This means no laxatives are needed at home.

You do not need to come on an empty stomach; on the day of the examination you can have light meals and plenty of fluids.
