Full gastroenterology: the painless path to digestive health

Short answer: A complete gastroenterology examination is a comprehensive medical evaluation of the digestive system (oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, liver, bile, pancreas). Its aim is to identify the cause of complaints by laboratory, imaging and endoscopic methods. If you are looking for the most accurate and convenient diagnosis, choose a combined gastroscopy and colonoscopy under general anaesthesia, where all lesions can be identified painlessly.

Digestive complaints such as recurring abdominal pain, persistent bloating or irregular bowel movements are a blight on many people's lives. These symptoms are particularly common in the over-50s, and most people put off going to the doctor for a long time. This is mostly due to fear of tests, especially mirror examinations. But modern medicine now offers gentle and painless solutions that make anxiety completely unnecessary.

A comprehensive gastroenterological examination not only helps to eliminate unpleasant symptoms, but can also be a life-saver. Diseases detected at an early stage, such as polyps that can prevent colon cancer, are perfectly curable. At Endomedix Gastroenterology Network, we offer state-of-the-art equipment and decades of professional experience to help you get well.

In this comprehensive article, we explain in detail what a full gastroenterological examination consists of, when it is essential and why you should entrust your health to expert hands.

For which symptoms is a complete gastroenterological examination recommended?

Diseases of the digestive tract can take many different forms. Some symptoms are mild but long-lasting, while others can be sudden and frightening. Although home remedies and over-the-counter remedies can bring temporary relief, they do not eliminate the underlying cause.

A full gastroenterological examination is particularly indicated if the following symptoms are present:

  • Recurrent or persistent abdominal pain: Especially if it is linked to meals or occurs at night.
  • Irregular bowel movements: Persistent diarrhoea, chronic constipation, or a combination of these.
  • Bloating and a feeling of fullness: If symptoms persist and diet does not bring relief.
  • Heartburn and acid reflux: Reflux disease can lead to damage to the oesophagus if left untreated.
  • Alarming (warning) symptoms: Unexplained weight loss, anaemia, difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), bloody or black stools, recurrent vomiting. In such cases, a medical examination should be carried out immediately.

Colonoscopy is also highly recommended for people aged 50 to 74 years without symptoms, as colorectal cancer causes no noticeable symptoms for a long time.

What is a complete gastroenterological examination?

Gastroenterology deals with diseases of the digestive tract. It includes diseases of the oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, liver, bile and pancreas. To make an accurate diagnosis, specialists use a step-by-step, sequential approach.

Consultation and taking a medical history

The investigation always starts with a thorough medical interview. The specialist will assess symptoms, previous illnesses, medications taken and any hereditary predispositions in the family (e.g. tumours, inflammatory bowel disease).

Laboratory tests

Urine and stool tests, as well as blood test results, can be used to determine whether there is an inflammatory process, an absorption disorder (e.g. celiac disease) or signs of anaemia in the body. You can also ask for a stool sample for culture or to detect hidden (occult) bleeding. For more information about laboratory tests, please visit here: Gastroenterology consultation

.

Imaging techniques

Abdominal ultrasound is used to assess the condition of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas and spleen. It can detect, for example, gallstones or enlargement of the liver. If necessary, the doctor may also recommend a CT scan or an MRI scan to map the internal organs even more accurately. Endoscopic procedures: the pinnacle of diagnostics

The internal surface of the hollow organs of the gastrointestinal tract can be assessed most accurately by endoscopic examination (endoscopic examination). These procedures allow not only visual inspection, but also histological sampling (biopsy) and immediate removal of certain lesions (e.g. polyps).

Gastroscopy (Gastroscopy)

During the test, a thin, flexible instrument is passed through the oesophagus into the stomach and duodenum. The optimal time for a diagnostic test is about 7 minutes. A gastroscopy is used to look for abnormalities in the mucosa, to diagnose ulcers and to detect the Helicobacter pylori bacteria. At Endomedix, patient comfort comes first, so the procedure is completely painless. Book an appointment here: GASTROSCOPY UNDER ANAESTHESIA

.

Colonoscopy (Colonoscopy)

A colonoscopy allows a detailed examination of the entire colon and rectum. The optimal instrument extraction time is 6-10 minutes, during which the specialist thoroughly examines the mucosa. This is the most effective method for detecting and removing polyps that may prevent colon cancer, and for diagnosing inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis). Before the examination, a thorough bowel cleansing is required, the steps of which are explained in detail by our specialists. .

Combined test for maximum comfort

The most efficient and time-saving solution is to perform two mirroring procedures at the same time. If both upper and lower gastrointestinal complaints are present, the doctor may recommend a combined procedure. In this way, only one anaesthetic and one preparatory procedure are required. .

Special gastroenterology tests

If symptoms are suspected to be due to food intolerance, contaminated small bowel syndrome (SIBO) or other malabsorption, the doctor may also recommend an exhalation test (for example, a hydrogen breath test with lactulose or fructose). These non-invasive procedures may also form part of a full investigation. If you need more information, please contact us: Gastroenterology consultation

Why do we anaesthetise and why don't we anaesthetise at Endomedix?

The greatest fear of mirror examinations is related to pain and discomfort. In patient care, there are two main methods to reduce discomfort: anaesthesia (sedation) and general anaesthesia (deep sedation/anaesthesia).

It is important to stress: for professional reasons, at Endomedix we only anaesthetise, we do not stun.

Why have we taken this decision?

  1. Total painlessness: During the anaesthesia, the patient is relaxed, but the pain sensation is not completely eliminated and the patient can move and communicate during the procedure. Anaesthesia (using propofol), on the other hand, induces a deep sleep state during which the patient does not feel anything from the examination.
  2. Professional precision and safety: With the patient still and relaxed, the specialist can examine the digestive tract more accurately and thoroughly. There is no need to rush, so even the smallest lesions (such as tiny polyps) can be safely identified and removed.
  3. Amnesic effect: Because of the amnesic effect of the anaesthetic drugs used during anaesthesia, no memory of the procedure is retained, which significantly reduces the fear of future medical interventions.
  4. Anaesthesia supervision: At Endomedix, all anaesthesia tests are performed by an experienced anaesthesiologist who monitors the patient's vital signs (blood pressure, respiration and pulse) throughout the test. This ensures maximum patient safety.

After the procedure, the patient wakes up with a clear consciousness within a short time. Because we use a modern carbon dioxide insufflation method to dilate the bowel, there is no tightness, bloating or cramping after the procedure.

How to prepare for the tests?

The success of endoscopic examinations depends largely on proper preparation. Before the gastroscopy, the patient should only observe fasting for a sufficient period of time (no food for 6-8 hours before the examination).

Preparation for colonoscopy is somewhat more complex, as complete cleanliness of the intestinal tract is essential for accurate visual assessment (to achieve optimal scoring according to the BBPS scoring system).

  • Diet: A low-fibre, easily digestible diet should be followed in the days before the test. Avoid seeded fruit, wholemeal bakery products and vegetables.
  • Omission of ferrous products: Stop taking iron supplements at least five days before the test.
  • Intestinal cleansing: The day before the test, a special laxative liquid should be consumed with plenty of fluids. Today, modern preparations are used that effectively cleanse the intestinal tract even in small amounts and are easier to tolerate.

Our professionals will support you every step of the way and provide written information to help you prepare at home.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about gastroenterology tests

How much does a full check-up cost and is it eligible for health insurance?

The prices of examinations and consultations vary depending on the procedure chosen and the location of the centre (consultations are available from 27.000 HUF, colonoscopies from 108.000 HUF). At Endomedix, the fees for examinations can of course be charged to a health insurance account, making it easier to plan your costs.

How long does it take to recover after an anaesthetic test?

Waking up from propofol anaesthesia is quick and clear. After a short rest in the observation room, the patient can be discharged to their home with an escort. They can return to light eating within a few hours, but an important rule is that driving or making responsible decisions on the day of the test is strictly forbidden.

Is it painful to have polyps removed during a mirror examination?

Not at all. Firstly, the procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and secondly, there are no pain-sensing nerve endings on the inner surface of the colon, so you will not experience any pain at the incision site after waking up. Choose safe prevention!

Which test is better: capsule endoscopy or conventional colonoscopy?

Choose colonoscopy if you want the most reliable result and the possibility of therapeutic intervention (polyp removal or biopsy) is important. Capsule endoscopy is an excellent diagnostic tool to examine the small intestine, but professional protocols still recommend colonoscopy as the primary method for screening for colorectal cancer.
