It is therefore advisable to perform these procedures under general anaesthesia. The patient under anaesthesia does not experience the discomfort of the test and wakes up quickly after the tests with a clear consciousness.
In the case of gastroscopy and colonoscopy under anaesthesia, these two examinations are performed simultaneously, or more precisely, immediately after each other, so that we can assess the patient's entire alimentary tract, take a histological sample or perform minor procedures in a single procedure.
Presentation of the test
At the beginning of a gastric and colonoscopy under anaesthesia, our anaesthesiologist puts the patient under anaesthesia, during which the patient can be awakened but does not experience what has happened.
The first step is a colonoscopy, during which the entire colon is usually examined using a 170 cm long instrument. Tissue samples are taken from abnormal lesions through a channel in the instrument, and any colon polyps found can be removed to prevent colon cancer.
Our doctor will then also perform a gastroscopy, which uses a thin fibre-optic instrument to examine the oesophagus, stomach and horseshoe. If necessary, a tissue sample will be taken using the instrument and therapeutic interventions may be carried out, such as the removal of small polyps or to stop bleeding.
Once the tests are complete, the patient remains in the observation room, where he or she will wake up quickly with a clear conscience under supervision.
What to know about the test
Prior to gastric and colonoscopy under general anaesthesia, a personal gastroenterology consultation is also required, where the specialist performing the procedure assesses the patient's condition and starts preparing the patient for the examination. A further face-to-face meeting with the anaesthetist is also necessary to decide on the anaesthetic suitability.
If the examination is warranted, the examining specialist may take a histological sample or, depending on the patient's condition, remove polyp(s). The cost of these procedures is not included in the price of the examination.
Proper preparation is essential for the success of the examination, which involves a thorough cleansing of the colon using various preparation agents. In our centres, we mainly use a preparatory powder called Endogol, which is an excellent colon cleanser, an isotonic solution that prevents the patient from having diarrhoea and upsetting the balance of important minerals.
In our centres, to counteract the energy loss and consequent weakness caused by the required 3-day liquid diet, we prescribe formula for 3 days of preparation, which allows our patients to tolerate the test preparation much better than patients prepared in other medical institutions.
It is important to note that there may be some temporary uncertainty in the hours following the administration of anaesthetics, for example, you should not drive a car.
