Colonoscopy is of paramount importance in the prevention of colorectal cancer, as it can help not only to detect conditions leading to the development of colorectal cancer early, but also to treat them safely for years. As the risk of colon cancer increases significantly over the age of 50, colonoscopy is recommended for everyone at this age - it is the only treatment that offers long-term protection against this dangerous cancer, which is now the second most common cause of cancer death in Hungary.
But colonoscopy may also be the right test for suspected bleeding in the digestive tract, bloody stools, chronic diarrhoea or constipation (or alternating) and persistent abdominal pain.
Colonoscopy is an unpleasant test and it is recommended that it be performed under general anaesthesia. Although colonoscopy under anaesthesia is more expensive, the discomfort of the test can be completely eliminated by anaesthesia.
Presentation of the study
At the beginning of a colonoscopy under anaesthesia, our anaesthesiologist places the patient under a superficial anaesthetic, during which the patient can be awakened but does not experience what has happened.
All colonoscopies are performed in our centres using state-of-the-art FUJINON G5 series video colonoscopes. The entire colon is usually examined with a flexible instrument about 170 centimetres long.
Tissue samples are taken from abnormal lesions through a channel in the device and any colon polyps found can be removed to prevent colon cancer.
After the examination is completed, the patient remains in the observation room, where he or she wakes up quickly with a clear conscience under supervision.
What to know about the test
Prior to colonoscopy, a personal gastroenterology consultation is also required, where the specialist performing the procedure assesses the patient's condition and begins preparation for the examination.
A further face-to-face meeting with the anaesthetist is also necessary to decide on the anaesthetic suitability.
If the examination is warranted, the examining specialist may take a histological sample or, depending on the patient's condition, remove polyp(s). The cost of these procedures is not included in the price of the examination.
Proper preparation is essential for the success of the examination, which involves a thorough cleansing of the colon using various preparation agents. In our centres, we mainly use a preparatory powder called Endogol, which is an excellent colon cleanser, an isotonic solution that prevents the patient from having diarrhoea and upsetting the balance of important minerals.
In our centres, to counteract the energy loss and consequent weakness caused by the required 3-day liquid diet, we prescribe formula for 3 days of preparation, which allows our patients to tolerate the test preparation much better than patients prepared in other medical institutions.
It is important to note that there may be some temporary uncertainty in the hours following the administration of anaesthetics, for example, you should not drive a car.
