Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is of paramount importance in the prevention of colorectal cancer, as it can help not only to detect conditions leading to the development of colorectal cancer early, but also to treat them safely for years. As the risk of colon cancer increases significantly over the age of 50, colonoscopy is recommended for everyone at this age - it is the only treatment that offers long-term protection against this dangerous cancer, which is now the second most common cause of cancer death in Hungary. But colonoscopy may also be the right test for suspected bleeding in the digestive tract, bloody stools, chronic diarrhoea or constipation (or alternating) and persistent abdominal pain.

Presentation of the test

Our centres are all equipped with the latest FUJINON G5 series video colonoscopes for colonoscopies. The entire colon is usually examined with a flexible instrument about 170 centimetres long. Tissue samples are taken from abnormal lesions through a channel in the instrument and any colon polyps found can be removed to prevent colon cancer. Even with the greatest care and the best equipment, a colonoscopy is an unpleasant procedure when you are awake. Although it costs a little more, the examination is completely painless and can be performed under general anaesthesia in our centres.

What to know about the test

Prior to colonoscopy, a personal gastroenterology consultation is also required, where the specialist performing the procedure assesses the patient's condition and begins preparation for the examination. Proper preparation is essential for the success of the examination, which involves a thorough cleansing of the colon using various preparation agents. In our centres, we mainly use Endogol, a preparation powder that is excellent for cleansing the colon and, as an isotonic solution, prevents the patient from having diarrhoea, which can upset the balance of important minerals. In our centres, to counteract the energy loss and consequent weakness caused by the required 3-day liquid diet, we prescribe formula for 3 days of preparation, which means that our patients tolerate the test preparation much better than patients prepared in other medical institutions. If indicated during the examination, the examining specialist may take a histological sample or, depending on the patient's condition, remove polyp(s). The cost of these procedures is not included in the price of the examination.

Settlement also to a health fund account

The fee for the examination can of course also be charged to your health insurance account - our colleagues will be happy to provide you with more details.
