Gallstones - a disease affecting 10% of the gallstone population, more common in women.
The most common are cholesterol stones, which can be predisposed to formation by older age, obesity, female gender, fat metabolism disorders, diabetes, pregnancy, certain medications, sudden weight loss, certain genetic factors, or small intestine diseases.
Rarer are black pigment stones, which are in chronic haemolysis (red blood cell breakdown), Mayshrinkage, pancreas can develop in inflammation. There are also brown pigment stones, which form at the base of a bacterial biliary tract infection.
