Diseases of the liver – given the liver's wide-ranging functions, the range of its diseases is also very broad.
In terms of patient numbers, the most important liverdiseases are the virus-induced inflammations of the liver, i.e. hepatitis A, B, C, D and E, liver tumours, alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, autoimmune inflammatory liver diseases, and liver damage caused by medicines and toxic substances.
In addition, diseases with a genetic background, storage diseases, diseases affecting the whole body – including the liver –, disorders of the circulation of the liver, and non-viral liver infections are also of great importance.
