Colitis – the main types of inflammatory disease of the colonare as follows:
Of infectious origin colitis(very common; they can cause diarrhoea or bloody diarrhoea and may even lead to severe dehydration), associated with antibiotic use, classed as inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease), and inflammation of the finger-like outpouchings of the colonwall (diverticula), known as diverticulitis.
The above colitistypes include ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, which are of particular importance because they are lifelong conditions that require regular follow-up and in which, after many years, the colorectal cancerrisk may be raised.
The colitis symptoms typically include diarrhoea, bloody stools, abdominal pain, anaemia and symptoms outside the bowel (eye pain, sensitivity to light, skin symptoms, joint pain, kidney stones, liver disease).
