Role and function of the oesophagus - the oesophagus can be functionally divided into three parts: the upper sphincter ring, the lower sphincter ring and the tubular section in between.
The upper sphincter prevents air from entering the sphincter when inhaling Food-pipebut relaxes when swallowed, helping the bite to enter the tubular phase.
The tubular section is responsible for passing the swallowed saliva and the bite.
The lower sphincter prevents acidic, sometimes bile-like stomach contents from returning to the Food-pipeand helps the bite to pass into the stomach.
