Rectum

Rectum - the rectum is the last part of the large intestine, which connects to the sigmoid colon at the top and ends at the bottom in the anus through the anus duct.

A rectumlocated in the pelvic cavity, in front of the sacrum and the coccyx. A rectumlength is approximately 12 centimetres. Stools are stored here before being evacuated, and when full, the intestinal tract dilates into a pitcher shape.

The rectum is covered by a reddish, shiny mucous membrane containing glands, and the underlying connective tissue contains a tortuous vein fascia.

A rectumhas two annular sphincters in its walls, which are responsible for regulating the passage of faeces. The internal sphincter is involuntarily innervated, while the external sphincter is directly rectumis located at the orifice, and is a volitional indoctrination.

A rectumand the coordinated movement of the two sphincter muscles help the stool to pass out of the intestinal tract.
