Location and structure of the rectum - the rectum is the last part of the large intestine, which is connected to the sigmoid colon at the top and ends at the bottom in the anus through the anal canal.

A rectumis located in the pelvic cavity, in front of the sacrum and the coccyx, and is approximately 12 cm long. The rectum is covered with a reddish, shiny mucous membrane containing glands, and the underlying connective tissue contains a tortuous vein fascia.

A rectumhas two annular sphincters in its walls. The internal sphincter is involuntarily innervated, the external sphincter is located directly at the anus and is involuntarily innervated. A rectumand the coordinated movement of the two sphincter muscles help the stool to pass out of the intestinal tract.
