GASTRIC AND COLONOSCOPY UNDER ANAESTHESIA

In the case of gastroscopy and colonoscopy under anaesthesia, these two examinations are performed at the same time, or more precisely, immediately after each other under anaesthesia.

When is it advisable to have the test carried out?

Persistent abdominal pain and bloating. If you regularly experience lower abdominal cramps, tightness or troublesome bloating of unknown origin that does not go away on its own, it is worth having the underlying causes investigated.

Changes in bowel habits. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you experience persistent constipation, diarrhoea or an unexplained alternation between the two, as this may indicate a more serious bowel problem.

Frequent heartburn and acid reflux.Recurrent acid regurgitation, pain around the upper part of the stomach or persistent hoarseness are often caused by reflux disease, which we diagnose effectively at our reflux centre.

Bloody stools or occult bleeding.Any form of blood in the stools requires immediate medical investigation to rule out inflammatory processes, polyps or cancerous lesions.

Unexplained weight loss and iron deficiency. If your weight drops significantly without you being on a diet, or if your blood test results show persistent iron deficiency, this may indicate a malabsorption disorder of the digestive system or chronic bleeding, which must be investigated.

Suspected chronic enteritis. If Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis is suspected, a colonoscopy is the only way to make an accurate diagnosis and to determine the extent and location of the inflammation.

Cancer screening for people aged 45–50 and over.Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer. Everyone aged 45–50 and over is advised to undergo screening, even if they have no symptoms.

Family accumulation and control. If there is a family history of cancer of the digestive system, or if you have previously had polyps removed, regular check-ups are crucial for maintaining your health.

Preparations and Dietary Advice for the Test

I.

Special diets and bowel cleansing

In the days leading up to the examination, you will need to follow a specific diet to help clear your bowels. Our specialist will select the most effective laxative formulation tailored to your needs, which will gently but thoroughly cleanse the areas to be examined.

II.

Maintaining electrolyte balance

The modern, isotonic solutions used during the preparation ensure that your body does not lose any essential minerals. We also maintain your electrolyte balance throughout the cleansing process, so you feel safe throughout and avoid feeling weak.

III.

Hydration and maintaining energy levels

Keep an eye on your energy levels even during a colon cleanse! Instead of solid food, eat plenty of filtered, clear liquid: strained meat stock, still water or light tea. This helps to prevent weakness and dizziness, whilst ensuring that the bowel is completely clear for the examination.

Save time and energy: two tests, half the preparation, no hassle.

Why it is worth carrying out the tests all at once

1. Only one anaesthetic is required

The biggest advantage of the combined examination is that you only need to be put to sleep once. Our anaesthetist supervises the entire procedure, whilst both examinations are carried out comfortably and completely painlessly.

2. A one-off, inconvenient preparation

The diet and laxative regimen prior to the scans are the least popular part of the process. If you request both scans at the same time, you’ll only have to go through the cleansing process once, saving you a great deal of time and discomfort.

3. A comprehensive overview of the digestive system

Symptoms are often interrelated, and a comprehensive examination of the entire digestive system provides a much more accurate diagnosis. This enables our doctors to assess the condition of both the upper and lower sections of the digestive system at the same time, which helps them to draw up the most effective treatment plan.

Did you know that you won’t remember anything after the procedure under anaesthesia?
Many patients are concerned about unpleasant experiences, but due to the amnesic effect of the anaesthetics used, they will not be aware of the procedure at all. You will wake up after a restful sleep, free from any physical discomfort, nausea or the urge to retch, so you will have absolutely no memory of the examination.
Did you know that a gastroscopy and colonoscopy together take only 30–45 minutes?
Although examining the entire digestive system may seem complicated, in the hands of an experienced specialist, the combined procedure is extremely quick. This short period of time is sufficient to examine every critical point from the oesophagus to the rectum, take samples, or even remove any small polyps detected immediately.
Did you know that you can eat light meals just one hour after the examination?
Many people worry about going without food for a long time, but the good news is that, after a short observation period following your awakening, you will no longer need to fast. We recommend that you start by having some fluids, followed by light, easily digestible foods, so that your digestive system can gradually and comfortably return to its normal routine.
Did you know that you must not drive a car on the day of a procedure carried out under general anaesthesia?
Although you may feel alert and refreshed immediately after waking up, the anaesthetics may have a minimal effect on your reflexes and your ability to make decisions. For this reason, you must be accompanied by someone when you arrive at the clinic, and for safety reasons you must not drive a vehicle or carry out any work requiring a high level of responsibility on the day of the examination.
Did you know that the removal of polyps during the examination is completely painless?
If the doctor finds a polyp during the endoscopy, they can remove it immediately using specialised instruments. As there are no pain receptors on the inner surface of the bowel wall, you will feel absolutely nothing during this procedure. This step is crucial, as removing polyps can prevent the development of cancer.
Did you know that having your period is not a barrier to having a colonoscopy?
A common question amongst women is whether their menstrual cycle affects the appointment time. From a medical point of view, menstruation is not a reason to cancel the appointment: provided a tampon is used, the examination can be carried out hygienically and safely. However, if the cramps associated with your period are too severe, please let our staff know when booking your appointment.
Did you know that this test often reveals the real cause of iron deficiency?
In many cases, the iron deficiency underlying persistent tiredness is caused by hidden bleeding that cannot be detected by any other means. During gastroscopy and colonoscopy, our doctors can pinpoint the tiny sources of bleeding, meaning that, alongside iron replacement, the root cause of the problem can finally be effectively and permanently resolved.
Did you know that modern laxatives are now much easier to tolerate?
The days of old-fashioned, unpleasant-tasting liquids taken in large quantities are over. Today, we provide state-of-the-art preparation products which effectively cleanse the digestive tract even in smaller quantities, and which have a more palatable taste. Adequate cleansing is essential to ensure that our doctor can detect even millimetre-sized lesions.
Did you know that the CO₂ gas used during the examination helps prevent bloating?
At our clinic, we use a special form of carbon dioxide gas to distend the bowel during the examination. As this gas is absorbed by the body much more quickly than room air, you will not experience any agonising bloating or abdominal cramps after the procedure. This technology ensures a quick and comfortable return home.
Did you know that bacteria can also be detected in a sample taken during a gastroscopy?
The presence of Helicobacter pylori can be confirmed within minutes using a small tissue sample taken during the examination. This bacterium is responsible for a significant proportion of inflammations and ulcers, so following an immediate diagnosis, we can prescribe a targeted course of antibiotics for you, which can help prevent more serious digestive problems.

Gastroscopy and colonoscopy Procedure

Consultation

Upon arrival, our specialist and anaesthetist will discuss the exact procedure with you. All your questions will be answered so that you can undergo the diagnostic procedure with complete confidence and peace of mind.

Falling asleep quickly and peacefully

In the examination room, our anaesthetist will administer a gentle anaesthetic, which will put you into a deep sleep in a matter of moments. You will therefore feel nothing during the procedure, completely avoiding any pain or discomfort.

Precise diagnostics

Whilst you are asleep, our doctor will carry out the endoscopy using state-of-the-art equipment. If we find any suspicious lesions or polyps, we will remove them immediately and painlessly, thereby effectively preventing more serious problems later on.

Waking up and the expert’s report

After the examination, you will wake up in our comfortable recovery room, where our staff will monitor you at all times. Once you have fully recovered, our doctor will provide you with a detailed report and explain exactly what steps to take next.

In the case of gastroscopy and colonoscopy under anaesthesia, these two examinations are performed at the same time, or more precisely, immediately after each other under anaesthesia.

Why Choose Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy Under General Anaesthesia?

From GASTRIC AND COLONOSCOPY UNDER ANAESTHESIA At Endomedix, we offer the possibility of complete pain relief, as the patient feels no discomfort whatsoever during the procedure and wakes up feeling refreshed. The anaesthesia is administered by an experienced anaesthetist, who monitors the patient’s vital signs (blood pressure, breathing, heart rate) to ensure complete safety. Propofol, the anaesthetic used, is a fast-acting agent from which the patient wakes up with a clear mind within a short time and can quickly resume their daily activities. This combined procedure allows both examinations to be carried out simultaneously, which is particularly beneficial for those whose individual sensitivity might cause increased discomfort. Thanks to the anaesthesia, the patient lies in a relaxed state with complete muscle relaxation, making it easier for the doctor to device control and establishing a detailed diagnosis.

The Procedure and Importance of Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy

During the examination under general anaesthesia, we first carry out a colonoscopy, the aim of which is to examine the entire colon in detail using a modern video colonoscope. This enables the precise identification of polyps, areas of inflammation and cancerous lesions. If necessary, the doctor will take a biopsy sample, which is essential for diagnosing inflammation and precancerous conditions. Any polyps found during the examination are also removed, as this significantly reduces the risk of developing bowel cancer. Following the colonoscopy, a gastroscopy is performed, during which the specialist uses a gastroscope – a thin, flexible, fibre-optic instrument – to examine the oesophagus, stomach and the first part of the duodenum. A gastroscopy enables the detection of ulcers, inflammatory conditions and other stomach problems. If necessary, a biopsy can be taken during the procedure, and minor procedures, such as the removal of small polyps or the control of bleeding, may also be carried out. By performing a combined gastroscopy and colonoscopy, an almost complete examination of the digestive system can be carried out in a single session.

Preparations and Dietary Advice for the Test

Proper bowel preparation, which involves a special diet and laxatives, is essential for a successful gastroscopy and colonoscopy. Based on the patient’s individual needs, the attending doctor selects a preparation that effectively cleanses the colon whilst maintaining electrolyte balance as an isotonic solution. To make the preparation process easier, we also usually recommend consuming nutritional supplements for the duration of the preparation, which help to maintain the patient’s energy levels and general well-being during the pre-examination diet. In the days leading up to the examination, the patient will receive detailed instructions from their gastroenterologist and specialist nurses. The aim of these preparations, including dietary restrictions and the use of a laxative, is to ensure that the bowel is clear and easily visualised, so that even the smallest abnormalities can be detected.

Anaesthesia and the Safety of Examinations at Endomedix

The safety of gastroscopy and colonoscopy under general anaesthesia is ensured by Endomedix’s highly qualified anaesthetist, who monitors all the patient’s vital signs throughout the entire procedure. At the end of the examination, the patient wakes up quickly and fully alert in the recovery room, under supervision. During anaesthesia, the patient is completely relaxed, allowing the stomach and intestines to be examined thoroughly and accurately; procedures – such as the removal of polyps or the control of bleeding – are completely pain-free. After the examination, it is recommended that the patient avoid active activities, such as driving, for at least a few hours, as a temporary reduction in concentration or a feeling of unsteadiness may occur whilst under the influence of propofol. The Endomedix team is available to the patient for a post-procedure consultation, providing detailed information on the results and the next steps. Gastroscopy and colonoscopy under anaesthesia are therefore not only comfortable but can also be carried out comprehensively and safely.
