In the case of gastroscopy and colonoscopy under anaesthesia, these two examinations are performed at the same time, or more precisely, immediately after each other under anaesthesia.

Why Choose Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy Under General Anaesthesia?

From GASTRIC AND COLONOSCOPY UNDER ANAESTHESIA At Endomedix, we offer the possibility of complete pain relief, as the patient feels no discomfort whatsoever during the procedure and wakes up feeling refreshed. The anaesthesia is administered by an experienced anaesthetist, who monitors the patient’s vital signs (blood pressure, breathing, heart rate) to ensure complete safety. Propofol, the anaesthetic used, is a fast-acting agent from which the patient wakes up with a clear mind within a short time and can quickly resume their daily activities. This combined procedure allows both examinations to be carried out simultaneously, which is particularly beneficial for those whose individual sensitivity might cause increased discomfort. Thanks to the anaesthesia, the patient lies in a relaxed state with complete muscle relaxation, making it easier for the doctor to device control and establishing a detailed diagnosis.

The Procedure and Importance of Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy

During the examination under general anaesthesia, we first carry out a colonoscopy, the aim of which is to examine the entire colon in detail using a modern video colonoscope. This enables the precise identification of polyps, areas of inflammation and cancerous lesions. If necessary, the doctor will take a biopsy sample, which is essential for diagnosing inflammation and precancerous conditions. Any polyps found during the examination are also removed, as this significantly reduces the risk of developing bowel cancer. Following the colonoscopy, a gastroscopy is performed, during which the specialist uses a gastroscope – a thin, flexible, fibre-optic instrument – to examine the oesophagus, stomach and the first part of the duodenum. A gastroscopy enables the detection of ulcers, inflammatory conditions and other stomach problems. If necessary, a biopsy can be taken during the procedure, and minor procedures, such as the removal of small polyps or the control of bleeding, may also be carried out. By performing a combined gastroscopy and colonoscopy, an almost complete examination of the digestive system can be carried out in a single session.

Preparations and Dietary Advice for the Test

Proper bowel preparation, which involves a special diet and laxatives, is essential for a successful gastroscopy and colonoscopy. Based on the patient’s individual needs, the attending doctor selects a preparation that effectively cleanses the colon whilst maintaining electrolyte balance as an isotonic solution. To make the preparation process easier, we also usually recommend consuming nutritional supplements for the duration of the preparation, which help to maintain the patient’s energy levels and general well-being during the pre-examination diet. In the days leading up to the examination, the patient will receive detailed instructions from their gastroenterologist and specialist nurses. The aim of these preparations, including dietary restrictions and the use of a laxative, is to ensure that the bowel is clear and easily visualised, so that even the smallest abnormalities can be detected.

Anaesthesia and the Safety of Examinations at Endomedix

The safety of gastroscopy and colonoscopy under general anaesthesia is ensured by Endomedix’s highly qualified anaesthetist, who monitors all the patient’s vital signs throughout the entire procedure. At the end of the examination, the patient wakes up quickly and fully alert in the recovery room, under supervision. During anaesthesia, the patient is completely relaxed, allowing the stomach and intestines to be examined thoroughly and accurately; procedures – such as the removal of polyps or the control of bleeding – are completely pain-free. After the examination, it is recommended that the patient avoid active activities, such as driving, for at least a few hours, as a temporary reduction in concentration or a feeling of unsteadiness may occur whilst under the influence of propofol. The Endomedix team is available to the patient for a post-procedure consultation, providing detailed information on the results and the next steps. Gastroscopy and colonoscopy under anaesthesia are therefore not only comfortable but can also be carried out comprehensively and safely.

Related examinations

with gastroscopy and colonoscopy can be done without anaesthesia - it's cheaper, but even with the best equipment and the greatest care, the test can still be uncomfortable for the patient.
