During gastroscopy, the patient swallows a thin, fibre-optic instrument that allows the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum to be examined. Gastroscopy also allows tissue samples to be taken for histology, and our doctor can carry out therapeutic procedures as well.

Three reasons that make the decision easier
Why choose gastroscopy at Endomedix?
01
Immediate sampling
During the examination, painless tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken from any areas that look suspicious, which is essential for accurately identifying inflammatory processes or tumours. With this method, our doctors not only see the surface but also provide a diagnosis at cellular level, laying the foundation for the most suitable treatment plan.
02
Cutting-edge safety
Following the guidelines for quality endoscopy, our clinic offers patients the most advanced equipment and strict safety protocols. The carbon dioxide insufflation (CO₂) used during the examination significantly reduces the feeling of tightness after the procedure, so you can go through the diagnostic process with as little discomfort as possible and recover in peace.
03
Comprehensive treatment
As well as making a diagnosis, we also carry out therapeutic steps, whether removing small polyps or stopping bleeding in the upper digestive tract. This comprehensive approach means you do not have to wait for several different appointments, because with us detection and treatment take place in a single professional visit, sparing you unnecessary waiting.
The road to recovery
The test process step by step
Four steps from arrival to your report — from preparation to personalised treatment recommendations.
01
Careful preparation and arrival
An empty stomach is the key to a successful examination, so please do not eat or drink anything for at least six hours before the procedure. When you arrive, our specialist nurses help you get ready and explain every detail of the process, so that you can wait for the specialist examination to begin feeling completely safe and calm.
02
Personalised pain relief
Before the procedure, you can choose between local anaesthesia and full anaesthesia, depending on which makes you feel safer. If you choose anaesthesia, our specialist anaesthetist provides continuous monitoring; if you stay awake, we use a special throat spray to minimise the swallowing reflex, making the examination gentle and quick.
03
A precise diagnostic examination
During the procedure, our specialist uses a thin, flexible instrument to examine the lining of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum in detail. Thanks to modern technology, the examination takes just a few minutes, and if needed, tissue samples for histology or minor therapeutic procedures are carried out straight away for the most accurate medical diagnosis possible.
04
Expert consultation and your report
When the examination is over, our doctor immediately tells you what they saw and explains the results and possible next steps in detail. We do not just hand you the documentation: we also give you personalised treatment recommendations and lifestyle advice, so that you leave us with clear answers and a solid recovery plan.
If you have anaesthesia, please come with an adult companion and do not drive on the day of the examination. You will receive your exact arrival time and preparation instructions when you book.
What you should know about gastroscopy
Did you know?
Ten questions and answers about gastroscopy.
Did you know that gastroscopy is the most effective method of diagnosing reflux?
When stomach acid flows back up, it can damage the lining of the oesophagus, which can only be seen accurately with an endoscopic examination. During the endoscopy, the doctor can assess the extent of the inflammation and any erosions, which is essential for choosing the right treatment and preventing complications such as narrowing of the oesophagus.
Did you know that Helicobacter pylori bacteria can be identified during gastroscopy?
This bacterium is one of the most common causes of stomach ulcers and inflammation. From a tiny, painless tissue sample (biopsy) taken during the examination, our doctors can detect the infection quickly and with great accuracy. This is important because eliminating the bacterium in a targeted way can prevent more serious diseases from developing.
Did you know that gastroscopy takes only a few minutes?
Although many people are afraid of it, the diagnostic procedure itself usually takes only 5-10 minutes. In this short time, the specialist can thoroughly examine the entire inner surface of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. Thanks to modern equipment, the examination provides information quickly and extremely efficiently.
Did you know that gastroscopy and colonoscopy can be performed together?
Many of our patients choose combined screening, undergoing both procedures under a single anaesthesia. This is the most efficient and comfortable way to examine the entire digestive system. In a single session, stress-free and without pain, you get a complete picture of your health from the oesophagus to the rectum.
Did you know that you will be alert almost immediately after an examination under anaesthesia?
The drugs used in modern anaesthesia leave the body quickly. After gastroscopy under anaesthesia, patients are fully alert within 15-30 minutes and, after a short rest, can leave the clinic with a companion. So the procedure is not only painless, but recovery is also surprisingly quick and smooth.
Did you know that treatment can also be given immediately during gastroscopy?
The examination is not just for looking: during the procedure, our doctor can also remove small polyps or stop bleeding. This means you undergo diagnosis and treatment in a single session, avoiding the need for more serious and more invasive surgery later.
Did you know that a local anaesthetic for the throat makes the examination easier if you stay awake?
If you do not choose anaesthesia, we numb your throat with a special lidocaine spray. This effectively dampens the swallowing reflex and the urge to gag, making it easier for you to cooperate with the doctor. The numbness wears off on its own, completely painlessly, half an hour to an hour after the examination.
Did you know that fasting before the examination helps make the diagnosis accurate?
The 6-hour break from eating before gastroscopy ensures that the stomach is empty, so the specialist can examine the lining unobstructed and in full detail. This preparation is essential for even the smallest changes to become visible to the camera. Following the instructions precisely ensures the safety of the procedure and that you receive the most accurate specialist opinion possible.
Did you know that gastroscopy often reveals the cause of iron deficiency?
If your blood count shows a low iron level, the cause is often blood seeping from the upper digestive tract, invisible to the naked eye. Endoscopy can reveal tiny ulcers or areas of inflammation that cause the anaemia. Once the source is dealt with, your iron level can finally return to normal for good.
Did you know that gentle carbon dioxide can also be used for gastroscopy?
To make the walls of the digestive tract clearly visible, we introduce gas into the stomach. The carbon dioxide (CO₂) used at Endomedix is absorbed much faster than air, so patients do not experience uncomfortable bloating after the examination. This technology significantly improves comfort and speeds up recovery after the examination.
The gentlest option
Gastroscopy under anaesthesia: a quick and undisturbed process
Gastroscopy is one of the most effective ways to uncover the causes of upper digestive complaints, whether reflux, an ulcer or inflammation. At Endomedix, we make sure that the examination is not only professionally flawless but also causes the patient as little discomfort as possible. That is why, with us, the procedure is also available under anaesthesia, during which you are deeply asleep, so you are completely spared unpleasant sensations and reflexes. After waking up and a short period of observation, you can leave feeling rested. The diagnosis is just as accurate and thorough if you choose local anaesthesia.
The examination fee can of course also be paid from your health fund account — our colleagues will be happy to give you the details. The list of health funds that work with Endomedix can be found here.
